Breakwaters and Jetties  -  Featured Project

Sandy Point State Park was opened in 1952 after the State of Maryland purchased the site of the ferry landing that once ran across Chesapeake Bay to Kent Island. In the early 1970s, the jetty was relocated to the north to make way for the second span of the Bay Bridge and continued to settle over many more years until the State of Maryland contracted Shoreline Design, LLC to rebuild the structure in 2011. The iconic stone jetty can be easily viewed from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in its current form, which included rebuilding the structure with larger armor stone to create a much more substantial structure. The jetty minimizes shoaling of the existing navigation channel leading into the park and provides stability for the existing beach at Sandy Point while also providing access to the bay’s bounty for thousands of recreational fishermen.
